What Makes Okapis Unique?

The okapi is one of nature's most enigmatic creatures, residing deep within the Democratic Republic of Congo's Ituri Rainforest. With its chocolate-brown velvet coat and striking zebra-striped legs, this elusive mammal remained unknown to Western science until 1901, making it a truly mysterious discovery.

Are Okapis Related to Zebras or Giraffes?

Despite their zebra-like stripes, okapis are actually the only living relatives of giraffes. They share distinctive long, blue-black tongues extending up to eighteen inches, which strip leaves from branches and even clean their own eyes and ears with remarkable dexterity.

Okapis possess unique adaptations for rainforest life, including oil-secreting glands that waterproof their coats and large, independently rotating ears detecting the slightest sounds. Males sport short, skin-covered horns called ossicones, while females are slightly larger and hornless.
